Day surgery care is the case whereby  admission of elective patients to hospital for a planned surgical procedure, returning home on the same day. The day surgery uni is fully equipped to cater for patients undergoing procedures where a bedroom or overnight stay is not required. This facility ensures patients spend a reduced amount of time at the center, where clinically appropriate, and can return to their normal activities as soon as possible. During your time at our day surgery care unit you will be looked after by a team of friendly and dedicated nurses. Your care and comfort is of paramount importance to the team.

Orthopedic Procedures Covered by Day Surgery Unit

There are a range of orthopedic procedures where overnight stays are not required.

These include podiatric surgery (foot and ankle), closed reduction and immobilization of fractures and dislocations (Supracondylar Humerus), manipulation of the knee & shoulder, wound wash,open biopsy: Infection, tumor, excision biopsy: Bursa, ganglion, lipoma and Soft tissue release which involves the carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger

The selection of a patient for day surgery is be based upon social and medical factors:

  • Social factors – a patient is asked to understand the planned procedure, consent appropriately, and also have sufficient provisions to have a responsible adult escort them home and provide support for the first 24 hours of post-operative care.

     

  • Medical factors – a patient’s health must be suitable for a day case procedure, remembering that some stable chronic diseases such as asthma can often be better managed as a day procedure to minimize any disruption to their daily routine

After your operation you will wake up in the recovery area where the nurse will monitor you and prepare you for your discharge.

Your average stay after your operation is two hours although some surgeries require a longer stay and your nurse will advise you and your family of this.

You must ensure that there is a responsible adult to collect you and be with you for 24 hours post operatively.

NSOC physicians  will take your vital signs, treat any nausea or vomiting, offer fluids, manage your pain, give you prescriptions  and provide discharge education (both written and verbal) to you and to the person taking you home.

There is a Day surgery unit nurse  available 24 hours at day at the center who you can contact us (254) 791 399 103 / 4 or (254) 780 888 823 immediately if you experience any problems once you have returned home.
